Biography

Joseph Wimmer is one of the signatories of the founding document of the Washington Theological Union in March 1968 as Regent of Studies of Augustinian College. He joined the faculty at that time, but was transferred to Rome by his Augustinian Provincial, and returned to the Union in 1980.

Fr. Wimmer’s special interests lie in the area of biblical spirituality and the place of the Bible in the religion and science discussion. He has recently co-published an article online with Dr. Daryl Domning on evolution and original sin. He is currently working on a book on biblical spirituality.

Professional Activities

Fr. Wimmer also was a member of the translating staff and editorial board of the ICEL (International Committee for English in the Liturgy) volumes, The Psalter: A Faithful and Inclusive Rendering from the Hebrew into Contemporary English (1994) and The Canticles (1994).

Joe Wimmer

"As a response to God’s invitation in the Bible to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, spirituality is simple, but a proper understanding of the ramifications of that task involves an inter-disciplinary study of many areas, including sacred scripture, ecclesiastical history, systematic, moral, and pastoral theology, among others.”
